Tom Campbell

December 1, 2004 to November 10, 2005

Tom Campbell was appointed Director of Finance on December 1, 2004 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was born on August 14, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois. Campbell holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Chicago, as well as a law degree from Harvard University. He served as a clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron White as well as the Director of Bureau of Competition in the Federal Trade Commission from 1981 to 1983. From 1989 to 1993, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives for California’s 12th Congressional District. In 1993, he was elected as a State Senator in a special election and was the Chairman of the Housing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Education Committee, and served on the Budget and Fiscal Review Committee. In 1995, he returned to the House of Representatives for the 15th district until 2001.

After his time as an elected official and before becoming appointed as Director of Finance, Campbell went back into the academic world, serving as the Dean of the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.
