Acknowledgments
This report was prepared by Campbell Gibson. Dr. Gibson retired from the U.S. Census Bureau at the end of 2005 after a 35-year career, most recently as Senior Demographer. His publications include numerous Census Bureau reports and journal articles, including several on historical demographic trends in the United States. In addition, he designed the statistical content of several publications from the 1990 and 2000 censuses and of several 2000 census data sets on the Census Bureau's Internet site. He is native Californian and received a bachelor's degree in history from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in demography from the University of California at Berkeley.

Contents
This report shows decennial census data on the population of California counties by minor civil division (usually townships) and place from 1860 to 1950, which is the period for which data on township population were published for California. This period also covers major historical developments in Californias settlement patterns and population distribution as the States population grew extremely rapidly in most decades, from 380,000 in 1860 to 10.6 million in 1950. Townships refer to judicial townships, and places include, for example, incorporated cities and towns, and unincorporated places. For each county, the data are shown in hierarchal fashion, with townships and their component places (or place parts). In addition, places in each county are listed in alphabetical order, with township parts where places crossed township boundaries.
