1965: Director Hale Champion, Wife, and 19-Month Old Daughter Kidnapped

In July 1965, Mr. and Mrs. Hale Champion and their 19-month-old daughter Katherine, were kidnapped and held captive for 24 hours by two convicts who had just been released from an Oregon penitentiary. The kidnapping was at the tail end of a week-long crime spree that included the holding up a motel and bank, killing of a deputy sheriff, and kidnapping of nine people. This led to one of the biggest manhunts at that time, involving hundreds of local and state officers. The two convicts eventually surrendered without a fight. Mrs. Hale and their daughter were unharmed, but Mr. Champion suffered a gunshot wound fired by a vigilante who tried to stop the kidnapper. [Click on photos to enlarge.]

1979: Governor Brown Appoints First Female Director of Finance

Governor Brown and Director Mary Ann Graves Mary Ann Graves was the first female Director of Finance and was appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. on August 21, 1979.
